The Village Preservation Society of East Hampton celebrated the winners of the 2024 Historic Preservation Award at its annual meeting and Historic Preservation Award ceremony at the Tennis House on Saturday, September 29.

The society created the Historic Preservation Award to honor and promote significant preservation, rehabilitation, restoration or reconstruction projects and activities that contribute to the historic character of East Hampton and surrounding communities. In particular, the society endeavors to recognize efforts and resources involved in structures that are integral to a sense of place and are often otherwise unprotected by historic district status or regulations.

The Village Preservation Society of East Hampton has awarded a grant to the Eastville Community Historical Society in the amount of $10,000 toward the repair of the roof of the Heritage House located on Hampton Street in Sag Harbor. The Eastville Community Historical Society of Sag Harbor, chartered by New York State, works to preserve the history of the Eastville community, a working-class, multi-cultural district in Sag Harbor Village, and the northern-western part of East Hampton Town. The organization also maintains and preserves the historic St. David AME Zion Church, built in 1839 and thought to be part of the Underground Railroad, the original place of worship for African Americans and Native Americans living on Eastville Avenue.

The Village Preservation Society of East Hampton celebrated the winners of the 2023 Historic Preservation Award at its annual meeting and Historic Preservation Award ceremony at the Tennis House on Saturday, September 9. It marked the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of the award, and the society celebrated past and present winners.

A talk on the value of historic preservation to communities was given by renowned historic preservationist Frank Sanchis. Sanchis retired from the World Monuments Fund in June 2021, where he served as regional director for North America. With over 50 years of experience in architecture, preservation, and planning, he holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Pratt Institute and an master’s in historic preservation from Columbia University. Before joining the World Monuments Fund, he served as executive director of the Municipal Art Society, among many other notable achievements in historic preservation.

East Hampton Eats

The Village Preservation Society of East Hampton has partnered with local philanthropist Joe Rose, joining his East Hampton Eats, a Community Food Fund movement. The pair is aiding local restaurants in providing take-out meals to essential workers and others in need.
